3D design for Snap AR experience celebrating Hip Hop culture

Live Nation x Google Pixel – Hip Hop 50

Creative Direction & Design

Overview

Designing the Hip Hop 50 AR Experience: Hip Hop turned 50 in 2023, Google Pixel and Live Nation threw a nationwide celebration—and brought Plai in to make it unforgettable. The goal: create an augmented reality experience that let fans step straight into the story of Hip Hop. Powered by Snap AR, our experience let people time-travel through the genre’s most iconic eras, using a lens that gave users wearable 3D gear and a looping animated backdrop.

Working with our team’s amazing 3D artists, devs & producers, I led the art direction & visual design to build a truly dope lens. It was showcased on life size screens mirrored from the Pixel at Rolling Loud festival, inside the Google Pixel Experience. Fans could see themselves repping different eras of Hip Hop in real time.

From Hip Hop’s birthplace in the South Bronx in the late ’70s, through the ’80s, ’90s, ’00s, and beyond, we crafted a visual tribute that nodded to legends like Public Enemy, N.W.A, Jay-Z, and Travis Scott—and many more.

The whole thing was built to be immersive, expressive, and super shareable. As a lifelong Hip Hop fan (since the ’80s!), this was a dream gig—creative, cultural, and tech all rolled into one.
